Portrait of Sundas Jabeen

European Commission EU AI Act Fellow

I build software for the real world — and think carefully about what it does once it gets there.

Engineer first. I design and ship production systems across healthcare, industry and commerce, work on how organizations can adopt AI with governance, fairness and human oversight designed in from the start — and speak at conferences about what that takes.

01About

Engineer first.

The most interesting questions in software are rarely only technical. They are about who a system serves, who it overlooks, and who is accountable when it gets something wrong.

I came to technology through engineering: full-stack, with deep roots in the frontend. That put me where software meets the person using it.

From there the questions change. Not only how to build something, but who it might exclude, where bias can enter and who answers for it. Today I work where AI implementation, governance and European regulation meet, and speak about it at conferences and events.

02Selected work

Software that has to work in the real world.

Healthcare, heavy industry, B2B sales and large-scale commerce. Different domains, the same job: understand how people and organizations actually work, then build systems that hold up in production.

  1. 01 / 04San-I-PakHealthcare technology

A customer portal for software that runs inside hospitals.

A customer portal for a healthcare technology company whose solution operates in clinical environments across more than two hundred medical facilities.

Healthcare is unforgiving software territory. The people using it are busy, the environments are regulated, and reliability isn't a feature — it's the baseline.

The portal gives the company's customers a single, dependable place to work with them, built for a product that holds California Department of Public Health approval and is deployed across 200+ medical facilities.

    Deployment
    200+ medical facilities
    Approval
California Department of Public Health approved solution
    Context
    Regulated, real-world healthcare
    • Customer portal
    • Healthcare workflows
  2. 02 / 04Herrick SteelIndustry · Internal software

Translating a century of know-how into an intranet people use.

An internal intranet portal for Herrick Steel, a company with roughly one hundred years of history.

Organizations that have been around for a century carry an enormous amount of knowledge — much of it in habits, documents and people's heads rather than systems.

The work was to understand how the company actually operates and turn its workflows and information into internal software that fits the way people already work, rather than asking them to work around it.

    Organization
    ~100 years of history
    Type
    Internal intranet portal
    Role
    Design & build
    • Information architecture
    • Internal workflows
    • Intranet portal
  3. 03 / 04Pattons SteelB2B · Commerce

Replacing the back-and-forth of B2B quoting with a purpose-built engine.

A custom quotation experience for Pattons Steel, built around how B2B customers actually buy.

B2B buying still runs on emails, phone calls and spreadsheets more often than anyone would admit. Quotes are slow to request, slow to produce and hard to track.

Instead of forcing a retail checkout onto a business process, the quote engine is designed around the real workflow — giving customers a clear digital path to a quote, and the business a structured process behind it.

    Type
    Custom B2B quote engine
    Focus
    Digitizing a traditional sales process
    • Quote workflow
    • B2B customer experience
  4. 04 / 04Volvo CarsAutomotive · Digital commerce

Commerce and order systems where the details carry real weight.

Engineering across customer-facing digital commerce and order-processing systems for a global automotive brand.

Buying a car online is a long, high-stakes journey: payments, financing, retailer handover, tracking and everything that can go wrong in between. Each step has to be correct, and each step touches a real customer.

My work spanned checkout and order processing through to payments, finance applications, retailer integrations and the flows that keep the experience safe and recoverable — the kind of production system where scale, risk and user experience meet.

    Scale
    Global, customer-facing production systems
    Domain
    Commerce, payments & order processing
    • Checkout
    • Order processing & tracking
    • Payments — Stripe, Trustly, Klarna
    • Finance applications
    • Retailer integrations
    • Risk-related flows
    • Feature flags
    • Abandoned-cart journeys

03Responsible AI

AI can move fast without leaving responsibility behind.

From principle to practice

Principles only matter once they become requirements, architecture and process. This is how I translate them.

Risk
Classify the use case early — including under the EU AI Act — so obligations shape the architecture instead of arriving as rework.
Fairness
Trace where bias can enter: data, labels, design choices, deployment context and feedback loops. Evaluate across groups before and after release.
Human oversight
Design review, override and escalation paths that give people real authority — not a rubber stamp at the end of an automated decision.
Transparency
Make systems explainable to the people they affect, and keep the documentation and logs that let a team answer for them later.
Accountability
Clear ownership, audit trails and an incident process — because responsible deployment continues long after launch day.

AI should move forward. Responsibly.

04Europe · Policy · Community

Part of the conversation, not only the codebase.

Regulation, research and engineering move faster when the people in each room talk to one another. These are the rooms I'm in right now.

05What I stand on

People. Planet. Perseverance.

Three principles that shape how I build, lead and think about technology.

  1. People

Technology should work for people — especially the ones our systems most often overlook.

  2. Planet

Everything we build has a footprint. I try to think about long-term impact and the world our software lives in.

  3. Perseverance

Careers and technology are built the same way: curiosity, constant learning and the willingness to keep evolving.

06Connect

Let's keep the conversation going.

Building something, organizing an event, or thinking about the same questions I am? I'd like to hear from you.

I also write regularly about responsible AI, regulation, accessibility and engineering, mostly on LinkedIn for now.
